Santoni: the art of walking through time

The story of Santoni is not merely that of a footwear company, but the tale of an entrepreneurial vision that has succeeded in transforming a small artisan workshop into one of the world’s most highly regarded luxury shoe brands, whilst remaining firmly rooted in its heritage.

In the world of luxury, there are names that immediately conjure up an image of timeless elegance. One such name is Santoni, a brand that has transformed footwear from a simple accessory into a true work of art. Its history is a journey that began in a small artisan workshop and has taken it to the very pinnacle of the global fashion world, whilst always maintaining an unbreakable bond with its roots.

Andrea Santoni’s dream

Santoni was founded in 1975 in Corridonia, in the Marche region, an area with a historical calling to the Italian footwear industry. The founder, Andrea Santoni, a master shoemaker with extensive experience in the sector, decided, together with his wife Rosa, to set up a small artisanal shoe workshop. At a time when many companies were focusing on quantity and offshoring, Andrea Santoni went against the grain: he chose to create shoes of the very highest quality, made almost entirely by hand, for a clientele of connoisseurs.

Production was limited at first. Each shoe is the result of meticulous craftsmanship, where time is not a cost but an asset, and Santoni distinguished itself through its obsessive attention to detail, the selection of the finest leathers, and a vision of the shoe as a wearable work of art.

A pivotal generational shift

A pivotal moment in the brand’s history occurred between the late 1980s and early 1990s, when Giuseppe Santoni, the founder’s son, joined the company and gradually took the helm. With a more international and contemporary vision, Giuseppe initiated a structured growth process and implemented a modern production system, enabling the company to increase its production capacity whilst keeping its artisanal DNA intact.

Thus, Santoni has grown from a small workshop into a fully-fledged luxury shoe manufacturer, with hundreds of employees and a strong presence on the international market. Santoni shoes are stocked in luxury boutiques across Europe, the United States, the Middle East, and Asia, and have become a benchmark for those seeking timeless elegance and authentic Italian craftsmanship.

The hallmark: colour, patina and handcrafted details

One of the most iconic features of Santoni’s craftsmanship is the glazing technique. This process involves the manual application of numerous layers of colour to the leather, creating deep, unique shades. Every shoe is unique, because the colour is created by the craftsman’s hand rather than through a standardised industrial process.

Alongside its use of glazing, Santoni has kept traditional techniques alive, such as Goodyear welting, hand-cutting of uppers, and hand-finishing – elements that place the brand at the very pinnacle of luxury footwear.

From men’s shoes to a luxury head-to-toe look

Over the years, the company’s range – which initially focused almost exclusively on classic men’s shoes – has gradually expanded. In the 2000s, the women’s collections were launched, followed by luxury trainers, leather accessories, and leather goods. This evolution has enabled Santoni to appeal to a wider audience, without compromising on its reputation or stylistic consistency.

At the same time, the brand has entered into prestigious partnerships and strengthened its image as a symbol of high-end Italian craftsmanship, joining the Altagamma Foundation, which brings together the finest examples of Italian luxury.

Present and future: training, sustainability and continuity

In recent years, Santoni has invested heavily in training the next generation of artisans, establishing the Accademia dell’Eccellenza, a project designed to pass on the technical and cultural expertise of luxury footwear. This decision demonstrates that the brand’s future is being shaped in keeping with its past.

In 2025, the fashion house marked a historic milestone: 50 years in business. To mark the occasion, the Santoni Meraviglia publication was launched – a book celebrating the company’s savoir-faire and its ability to create beauty through craftsmanship elevated to an art form.

Santoni is a prime example of an Italian family business that has expanded globally without losing its identity. Its history shows that, even in a market dominated by speed, true luxury remains linked to time, craftsmanship, and the beauty of the handmade.

Well done to those who bring Made in Italy luxury craftsmanship to the world!
