After all the Olympic and Paralympic successes, there’s another Italian record worth celebrating: ski boot production, a sector in which Italy is a world leader. Almost all ski boots produced worldwide are designed and developed in the Sportsystem district of Asolo-Montebelluna (Treviso), a true Made in Italy excellence for ski boots: here, artisan tradition and technology merge, resulting in high-quality products chosen by athletes and sports enthusiasts. And it’s precisely in the Montebelluna district that Tecnica Group is located, a Made in Italy excellence, the world’s second-largest ski boot manufacturer (22%) and fifth-largest alpine ski manufacturer (11%).

The origins of an iconic brand

The history of Tecnica Group began in 1963 in Giavera del Montello, in the province of Treviso, when Giancarlo Zanatta transformed his father Oreste’s small shoe factory, which had been handcrafting work shoes since 1930, into an industrial business.

It was a period of great flurry, when the passion for sport and the mountains was beginning to spread among Italian families, and Tecnica knew how to seize the opportunity to meet this new need.

From Moon Boot to global success

The turning point in the Tecnica Group’s history came in 1969, when Zanatta, fascinated by a photograph of Neil Armstrong’s footprint on the moon, decided to create an après-ski boot, but not in leather, as was then the custom. Zanatta wanted to create a product that would allow for lightweight walking on snow, and thus the Moon Boot was born: an ambidextrous boot, padded with polyurethane foam to protect from the cold. Since then, the Moon Boot has won over millions of people worldwide: over 25 million pairs have been sold! It has also become an icon of functionality, style, and design, so much so that it has been included in the permanent exhibitions of the MOMA and the Triennale di Milano, and is displayed at the Louvre among the one hundred symbols of 20th-century design. The Moon Boot not only represents a creative milestone but also marks the beginning of Tecnica’s identity as a brand capable of combining technical innovation, functionality, and style.

Technological innovation and materials research

One of Tecnica Group’s strengths is its ongoing investment in research and development. The company has introduced numerous patented technologies to improve product comfort, stability, and performance, including customizable fit systems, innovative thermoplastic materials, and solutions that reduce weight without compromising durability.

Collaboration with professional athletes enables the company to continually test its footwear and sports equipment under extreme conditions, ensuring high-quality standards for both professional athletes and consumers.

The expansion and birth of an international group

Starting in the 1990s, the company embarked on a growth strategy based on targeted acquisitions. Tecnica Group was officially founded, an industrial group bringing together several brands specializing in the outdoor and winter sports world. These include Nordica, Blizzard, Lowa, Rollerblade, and other brands that enrich the company’s portfolio. Each of these brands brings its own tradition and specific expertise, allowing the group to cover a wide range of products for skiing, trekking, running, and skating, and to strengthen its presence in international markets while maintaining each brand’s high level of specialization and the quality of Made in Italy.

Sustainability and the future

Over the past few decades, Tecnica Group has placed great emphasis on environmental sustainability. The goal is to offer products that not only guarantee high performance but also have a lower environmental impact. For this reason, the group uses recycled materials and invests in improving the energy efficiency of its factories and optimizing production processes. This focus on eco-sustainability confirms the group’s commitment to combining technical innovation, Italian quality, and environmental responsibility.

Made in Italy as a distinctive value

Despite its international presence, Tecnica Group has maintained a strong Italian presence. Its headquarters remain in Giavera del Montello—the beating heart of innovation for skiing and outdoor sports—while its production facilities and research centers are spread across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. The group, led by Alberto Zanatta, has a turnover of €500 million, operates in over 80 countries, and employs over 3,000 people.

From an artisan workshop to a multinational corporation, Tecnica Group has successfully combined performance, design, and Made in Italy quality, becoming a global benchmark for ski boots, technical footwear, and sports equipment.

Congratulations to those who bring Made in Italy to the snow and Italy to the world!
