There are industrial stories that read like adventure novels. The story of the Techint Group is one such tale: a narrative that begins amidst the ruins of post-war Europe and goes on to conquer global markets, combining Italian ingenuity with the vastness of South America. From its very beginnings, the company has stood out for its approach and its ability to combine high-level engineering expertise with a strong international focus. These characteristics have enabled it to evolve and become one of the leading global players, whilst remaining firmly rooted in the ‘Made in Italy’ tradition.

The origin of an idea

In September 1945, Agostino Rocca, an engineer who had gained experience at Dalmine and Ansaldo, founded the Compagnia Tecnica Internazionale in Milan, soon abbreviated to Techint (from its telex code).

Initially, the company is focusing on engineering and construction projects. However, Rocca has its sights set further afield, on Latin America: the continent is experiencing rapid growth and needs modern infrastructure. In this new venture, Rocca will bring technical expertise, a commitment to quality, and a typically Italian entrepreneurial vision.

The challenge of the open spaces: first steps in Argentina

Having established a firm foothold in Italy, Techint opened its first overseas branches. The real test came in 1949 with a titanic challenge: the construction of a 1,600-kilometre gas pipeline between Comodoro Rivadavia and Buenos Aires. In prohibitive weather conditions and hostile terrain, Techint’s engineers demonstrated unprecedented logistical and technical prowess, positioning the company as a strategic partner that, in the decades that followed, would participate in the construction of key infrastructure, including oil and gas pipelines and industrial plants.

Techint’s ability to adapt to local needs and work side by side with communities has strengthened its reputation; the company stands out for its commitment to the local area and its focus on developing local talent.

Diversification and the founding of Tenaris

The Techint Group’s evolution continues with the diversification of its activities. From the 1950s onwards, the company invested in steelmaking and energy, sectors of strategic importance for industrial development. This path led to the creation of Tenaris, the result of the integration of steelmaking operations and the acquisition of Dalmine in 1996, and today, a world leader in the production of seamless steel pipes for the oil and gas industry.

This diversification has enabled Techint to evolve from an engineering firm into an integrated industrial conglomerate. The group is also expanding into industrial engineering with projects ranging from automation to the construction of complex plants, thereby contributing to technological growth in the countries where it operates.

Techint today: a legacy that looks to the future

Today, led by the third generation under Paolo Rocca, the Techint Group has celebrated 80 years of history and is a global enterprise active in numerous sectors: from steelmaking to engineering, from energy to infrastructure, and also in healthcare, with the establishment of Humanitas in Italy in the 1990s. Its commitment to scientific research and technological development enables the company to play a leading role in the most advanced markets, anticipating trends and offering cutting-edge solutions

With over 89,000 employees and projects underway in more than 40 countries, Techint remains true to its founder’s vision: a blend of technical rigour, a passion for work and a deep connection with local communities through educational programmes such as those run by the Roberto Rocca Foundation.
