Biovitae: light as a weapon (against viruses)

Biovitae: the sanitisation system that controls the proliferation of bacteria and viruses through light.

reading time2 minutes

Fighting viruses and bacteria with light? It sounds like science fiction and yet it can be done. What’s more, it is another expression of Made in Italy’s creativity and entrepreneurial talent.

Sanitising with light

BIOVITAE technology is the brainchild of two researchers from Salerno, Carmelo Cantiere and Rosario Valles, who designed and built a sanitising and lighting system capable of sanitising surfaces and places thanks to a special combination of light frequencies in the visible spectrum. While not making surfaces sterile, the system controls the proliferation of bacteria and viruses, contributing significantly to their safety.

A technology adopted by schools and hospitals

These lighting systems were already in use before the pandemic in several schools and a number of hospitals but, of course, their relevance grew exponentially with the advent of COVID-19 and especially after the validation of early research that confirmed they can eliminate up to 99.8% of viruses.

As proof of the project’s validity, BIOVITAE was selected as one of the world’s top 30 innovations at the Unaids Virtual Health Innovation Exchange, an award organised by the UN AIDS Agency.

BIOVITAE was realised by the Italian companies P&P Patents and Technologies and Sixsense Srl.
