There is always a lot of talk about quality wine. Still, not enough is said about a product with an equally ancient tradition, namely fine vinegar, which, as the Balsamic vinegar of Modena PGI shows, is truly outstanding worldwide!

Vinegar is a very ancient product and widespread in all civilisations; just think that in 4000 BC, the Babylonians were already making it from date, grape or beer wine and using it as a condiment, as a preservative, or to disinfect drinking water. For the Romans, vinegar was the main condiment for vegetables and was also used by the ancient Egyptians.

A company with centuries-old traditions

Italy has historical vinegar producers and companies with centuries-old traditions, such as Ponti Spa, which has been producing vinegar for nine generations. Founded back in 1787, two years before the French Revolution by Giovanni Battista del Ponte (later Ponti) in Sizzano, in the province of Novara, as the ‘Vinegar Factory’, it has a history of over 230 years.

Right from the start, Ponti won international recognition for quality. Over time, production improved, also thanks to Louis Pasteur’s discoveries in fermentation. In 1902, Antonio Ponti opened a new vinegar production plant in Sizzano, thus starting the industrial activity.

Expansion and diversification

In 1948, Guido Ponti, Antonio’s son, opened the Ghemme factory, the company’s current headquarters, while in the 1960s, under the leadership of Cesare and Franco, Guido’s sons, the company went through a phase of expansion and diversification of the business with the opening of new factories in Italy. In 1991, with the acquisition of Modenaceti di Vignola, specialising in balsamic vinegar, Ponti, by then Italy’s leading vinegar producer, began a path that led the Group to become a leader also in the Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PGI sector.

In 2000, Giacomo Ponti, the ninth generation of the family, started an internationalisation process and focused on innovation, quality certification and corporate social responsibility. 2014 saw the founding of Ponti USA in New York and Ponti France in Paris. Today, Ponti is still based in Ghemme (NO) and operates under the joint leadership of CEOs Giacomo Ponti and Lara Ponti.

At the beginning of 2022, the company presented a development plan of more than €20 million, which will also increase the workforce, which today adds up to 200 employees. With a turnover of 128 million euros, it is a leading producer of wine vinegar, apple vinegar, and pickled products and one of Italy’s largest balsamic vinegar producers.

Congratulations to those who bring the taste of Made in Italy vinegar to the world!
